Name of Restaurant: Tractors Classic American Grill
Location of Restaurant: St. Joseph St., Perryville, MO
Date of Visit: May 12, 2007

My experience with Tractors was a bit different as I was actually a crafter outside of the restaurant during Mayfest 2007.

I went inside and placed a carry out order and was told it would be about twenty minutes. I expected this as they were extremely busy with the lunch crowd. I had to wait approximately ten minutes before I could place my order so I had some time to look around. The restaurant was nicely decorated and the ambiance was very nice and private for each table. I especially enjoyed the wall of photos of people with their tractors and that visitors can contribute their own photos if they want to.

We ordered two chicken strips meals and an appetizer of stuffed potato skins, and I went back to get them after about twenty-five minutes.

When I got back to my booth with the food, I opened up what turned out to be a napkin-less and utensil-less meal. I apologize if this comes across wrong, but isn’t it common sense to include utensils and napkins with a carry-out meal? Especially when the people serving us knew our situation? But as it was so busy and we were hungry, we didn’t bother going all the way back there for utensils and napkins.

But the food itself? The chicken strips left a little to be desired, they were not quite what we expected, but they were not bad, either. The stuffed potato skins? We loved them! There were a lot more in that container than we had expected there to be in an appetizer, it could have been a full meal for one person, in fact. There was an uneven number so we “fought” over the last one. ;-) They became the bigger part of our meal, actually, and neither of us finished our main courses. We didn’t even try our bread, however, it was mostly hard as a rock.

Potato Skins Chicken Strips, etc.

I’d love to give this place a second try, but for now three stars because the main courses weren’t that great and for the lack of service regarding utensils and napkins, etc.

La Tropicana, St. Louis, MO

La Tropicana is a small neighborhood market and restuarant, located at 5001 Lindenwood, St. Louis, Mo.

The restaurant/market sits smack in the middle of its neighborhood, and sits on a corner. Driving up on it, and even up close from outside, did not give my wife and I a great first impression. We were meeting someone for dinner here, our friends Rick and Cindy, so we proceeded in anyway.

Sites and smells of the market surrounded us immediately. The door opened into the market side of the place, and the it was abuzz with shoppers. We were greeted right away, and spotting Rick and Cindy, were led back to their table.

The feel of the place is that of a corner deli and market. Seating was informal and sparse. There were about five tables for four out front of the glass case. No barrier stood between the eating area and the market. the menus were photocopies on every color paper under the rainbow, but were easy to read, with black lettering.

Rick and Ciny were ready to show us the ropes on the menu and ordering. There are little tricks in this place. One, you can order any drink they have in the market. Two, they don’t really do the formal check thing. Three, all deserts and drinks are basically the same price. When you ring out, you tell the cashier how many deserts and drinks you had, and they add it to your bill. Very trusting.

Down to the choices…. the fair contained several Cuban specific dishes, including a St. Louis famous Cubana Sandwich. Beyond just Cuban dishes, were many South American standards, such as empanadas and croquettes. We’d come to try the Cuban food, our first time ever, so we stuck to those items.

Sharon had the Cuban sandwich, while I had a dish called Ropa Vieja, or “old clothes.” Rick ordered the same as myself, and Cindy ordered another one of the Cuban dishes. The waitress spoke both english and Spanish, making ordering easier.

Our waitress was very attentive and was ready to take our order right away. After that though, it was about a 15 minute wait for the food to arrive. This was perfect, as we had time to visit and catch up with our hosts. While we waited, a carafe of water was brought to our table as three of us just drank water.

Our dinners arrived and we were not disappointed. My wife’s Cuban sandwich was warm, the bread fresh, but crusty, and the meat was tender and juicy. My “old clothes” dinner was very tasty also. It had the simmered beef over rice, served with a side of yuca and a surprise treat, glazed plantains. Quite yummy overall. The sample bites of Cindy’s dish were also quite good.

Deserts were another matter, as they had several choices, all from local pastery and desert makers. We settled on a couple of chocolate covered cheesecakes to share. Scrumptious!!!!!

This restaurant might be out of the way, and definitely casual, but it was a fantastic find. We both enjoyed our food, and the pricing was great. Overall value is 5/5 on this place, with a great variety. Service was also very good, the desert choices were all mouth-watering.

As an added bonus, La Tropicana is considered the number one Hispanic and South American market in St. Louis. It carries ingredients for food from Peruvian to Cuban and Brazilian, all under one roof.

Highly recommended if you are down that way.

Thai D’Lish – O’Fallon, Mo

Triangles with sweet sauce

Thai D’Lish is a fairly new restaurant in O’Fallon, Mo. It takes the place of the recently closed Sasi Thai Bistro on Highway K.

The picture above was our appetizer, listed on the menu as shrimp triangles. They were recommended by the hostess, and arrived quickly and hot. Flaky and crisply crust just melted in our mouths without even using the sweet sauce they provided. Inside, the filling was still hot, and a rich tasting shrimp mix. Bits of shrimp were mixed into the filling, but the taste was anything but fishy. A great choice to kick off the meal.

I chose the house speciality, Thai D’Lish. Pictured below.
Thai D'Lish is the dish too

This dish was marked as hot on the menu. Chicken and mixed vegetables with noodles in a light curry sauce were spicy as advertised. But not spicy as in burn your mouth hot, but more traditional. Lots of flavors and textures made this dish another great first time choice. Again, this was recommended by the hostess. The picture doesn’t do it justice, as it was well presented on the plate and piping hot.

My wife chose a more American dinner, a Thai Steak. The meat was seasoned with traditional Thai spices, again not hot, but flavorful. Jasmine rice and grilled asparagus provided interesting sides, and a nice change from potatoes. I swapped some of my chicken mix for the asparagus though, as my wife’s not a big fan.

The meals were both filling and gave us that comfort food feel. That left no room for desert on this visit. But the quality of the food, and the wonderful hostess put this restaurant on our must revisit list for sure.

Happy Eating,
Todd
